Synopsis

Over the course of eight hours on 1 January 1999, Volgons successfully orchestrate the invasion of Great Britain. Their superior numbers force back NATO troops, their nuclear bombs hit the Midlands, their forces successfully take Heathrow Airport, London, and the North Sea Oil Rigs. The Volgons proceed to carry out political assassinations and kill civilians. Members of the Royal Family undergo voluntary exile in Canada, and the United States is forced to recognize the Volgon occupation.

Bill Savage, a lorry driver, returns home the next day and is informed by his friend Whitney that a stray shell took out his home with his family inside. Savage finds a shotgun in the rubble, takes out a patrol car, and declares a one-man war against the Volgons.

Notes

  • Much of this installment prior to Savage's first appearance was heavily outlined by IPC publisher John Sanders. Mills also cites Kelvin Gosnell, his eventual successor as editor, as providing "considerable input."[2]
  • The recurring television reporter is intended to be Angela Rippon, and the official the Volgons sentence to death on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral was intended to be (then future) Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The IPC board vetoed this, and so in the final version the reporter goes unnamed and Thatcher is renamed to Shirley Brown. IPC also vetoed the original idea of the Russians as villains, forcing a late renaming to Volgons. Assistant art editor Kevin O'Neill was tasked with altering Blasco's art.[2]
  • In 1977 and 1999, Elizabeth II was the real Queen of England.

Synopsis

In the twenty-third century, only synthetic food exists. Man's craving for meat has driven them back in time 65 million years, where the Trans-Time Corporation sends cowboys out into the wilderness to heard herbivores. Joe Brontowski, a novice, is teamed up with Maverick during a trip to retrieve some styracosaurs led by Earl Reagan. However, Maverick is devoured by a phobosuchus, and the smell of his blood attracts a herd of tyrannosaurs. The tyrannosaurs' attack causes the styracosaurs to stampede, and Earl leaps onto one and steers it (and the rest of the herd) away from a cliff. The situation resolved, Earl remarks that he feels a war between man and dinosaurs grows closer.

Notes

  • The time period is identified as 65 million years ago. However, Styracosaurus lived 75 million years ago, and Deinosuchus (no longer phobosuchus) lived 73 million years ago.

Synopsis

John Probe is subjected to compu-puncture to enhance his strength and undergoes surgery to have computer circuits printed on his skull. An emergency in Cottesdale sends him straight into action, where he takes out a group of armed terrorists. Probe is initially freaked out by his own strength, but is told by the computer in his brain that emotions are irrelevant. Probe chases down a final terrorist, outrunning his motorcycle, but the terrorist informs him that this operation was merely a distraction, and that a Vulcan bomber is about to drop deadly nerve gas on London.

Notes

  • There's not really any good reason for the terrorist at the end to tell Probe his plans.

Synopsis

It's 2050. The Harlem Heroes win the preliminary round of the World Aeroball Championship 8-2. However, as they leave the stadium, their road-liner crashes, leaving the four named characters the only survivors--and Meyer existing only as a head. Though the rest of the team is ready to throw in the towel, Meyer insists they reform the team and win the championship, in honor of those they lost.

Notes

  • A caption claims the jetpacks are controlled by buttons on players' belts. However, though buttons are present, no one is ever depicted pressing them.
